____________________________

There is a global village

where ancient grievances , endless
agonies turn on lathes
of uncountable echoes .  There is
a plea never heard  in the din of gain,
an infinite vowel careening
from a severed head suspended
between Guernica and Nankind
New York and Babi Yaar,
Wounded Knee and Santiago de Chile
tossed by the bull
of ancient grievances . We mourn
in the marrow of blue-violet ashes
where we would the bone dust
of fallen comrades turn to light
in the figure of an iris . Who
are the fallen? Is it Adam ,his finger
still stuck to the finger of god
with primordial slime?
khadesha's clavicle bent by the pestles
of rage in the crucible
of negotiations , vendetta and famine?
Whose memory survives this mausoleum
suspended beneath two pillars of smoke,
the archeological dust of Antioch,
a cave on Okinawa,
the 1000 - year stench of Kosovo?
If it is our will there shall be
more of these monuments.

Beauty for Ashes Memorial and Duda Penteado

On September 10, 2008, New Jersey City University (NJCU) is proud to announce the dedication of a mixed-art assemblage by Brazilian-American artist Duda Penteado, donated by the Brazilian-American Cultural Institute of Washington, DC.  The event will take place 2:00 p.m. in the Michael B. Gilligan Student Union located on the campus of New Jersey City University in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Among the invited honored guests will be: the Consul General of Brazil, H.E. Ambassador José Alfredo Graça Lima; Ambassador of Brazil to the United States, H. E. Antonio De Aguir Patriota; Permanent Representative of Brazil to the United Nations, H. E. Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti; and the Honorable United States Senator Robert Menéndez.

Growing up in the multicultural and diverse city of São Paulo helped prepare Mr. Penteado to create the featured work “Beauty for Ashes Memorial Project” based on the dreadful events of 9/11.   Serving as an ambassador of the arts and now a resident of Jersey City, he has been a catalyst in bringing together society, business, and government on local and international levels. Through his art, Mr. Penteado was instrumental in forming the sister-city relationship between Jersey City and Vitória, Brazil.   The significance of having the work of an acclaimed international artist on the NJCU campus speaks to the scope of the international student population at NJCU and Jersey City.

This special occasion will be followed by a ceremony at which the Brazilian flag will be raised at City Hall under the auspices of the Honorable Mayor Healy of Jersey City.
