REFLECTING ON THE HISTORY OF JERSEY CITY

Jersey City summer Works: Public Art Program 2018

REFLECTING ON THE HISTORY OF JERSEY CITY Mini Doc. directed by Duda Penteado and produced by Unshakeable Productions explores the creative process of 28 Jersey City high – school and college students from The Jersey City Summer Works Fine Art Youth Program (JCYW ) 2018 who created a 160-foot long MURAL located right across the Mary McLeod Bethune Life Center in the Greenville area.

In working with fine artist Duda Penteado and Catherine Hart, the selected group or art – students reflect on historical facts of the City of Jersey City to create a MURAL with many special and important moments of the most ethnically diverse city in the US. This project is part of the Jersey City Mural Arts Program (JCMAP), Mayor Fulop’s initiative created in 2013 as part of the city’s anti-graffiti efforts which has so far resulted in over 120 large-scale murals painted throughout the city by a mix of local, national and international artists.

The Jersey City Summer Works Fine Art Youth Program (JCYW ) also aims to promote interdisciplinary art history education as well as provide opportunities for young people to engage in the interactive processes inherent in the production of public art. This year of 2018 the research field trip was at the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island Museum and at the Jersey City Public Library. In addition to that, the art – students worked in small teams and were given a step-by-step instruction on public art techniques, including concept development, surface preparation, design enlargement, paint application, and preservation techniques.
